Private Records Being Used to Make Profits

Hospitals are being criticized for patient data mining.

There have been concerns about hospitals using data mining to determine which patients are most likely to pay their bills on time. This information is uncovered by observing and analyzing private information such as health records. Critics say that mining for the best customers selects privileged patients and denying less privileged people of the right to healthcare. Hospital employees claim that it helps determine the most effective drugs to use and surgeries to perform, and improve the services provided to patients. The purpose of looking through private records to find the best customers is to make higher revenues through customer relationship management.

  1. Does this not sound like an invasion of privacy? One shouldn't be discouraged in the healthcare system because they can't pay their bills on time. Would you want to be discouraged knowing that you have no insurance to pay your hospital bills?

  2. Well i think this can be a good idea. Instead of paying for other people health insurance and finding customer who can afford health insurance kind of gets rid of all the expenses. On the other hand why should people pay for other people health insurance if they cant afford it. I think the issue is a double edged sword there is no right or bad things.

  3. Wow, this seems as though it is completely unethical to me. First and foremost, I am aware that there are a lot of expenses that come along with healthcare in America. However, I really struggle with the fact that people are turned away due to their inability to pay. Healthcare is often times the difference between life and death and if you have the means to help someone in that manner, you should. I know someone has to eventually bite the bullet in the payment process but its the price you pay to live in America. I feel as though this process should be strictly prohibited because it is in a form discrimination. It is not the racial or gender-based discrimination we are more accustomed to hearing about but it still denies people basic needs. THIS IS WRONG!
